Prativa Sarker's Biography

Prativa Sarker, a scholar and professor of English literature, started her journey as a literary author in the 1980s which was then interrupted for decades. Her return to writing during the postmillennial years witnessed the emergence of a unique voice in Bengali literature, as established by a robust canon of short stories, novels, and essays. Recognition— both critical and popular— followed soon after. Today, she is a familiar name in Bengali literature, with innumerable readers eagerly awaiting her next work.

Prativa calls herself a practitioner of literary realism. The foundation of her fiction are empirical experiences she gathered through her travels across India. She has the rare ability to perceive the multivocal, multidimensional India that has mostly vanished or is fading fast from popular imagination. Her work stands as a living document of our times.

After decades of teaching English literature at one of Kolkata’s premier colleges, Prativa  is now a full-time writer and traveller. Deeply invested in social work, she brings marginalized voices— transcending caste, class and gender— to life with raw, frank authenticity. Alongside social and political themes, she is drawn to reimagining epics and myths.
